When God Takes You Back, He’s Setting You Up for Greater

I have shared quiet a few times now about Gilgal and what it means, it’s a season of preparation for more. Sometimes this place may feel like God is taking you a few steps backward. Doors close, opportunities are missed, and progress feels delayed. But in the Kingdom of God, what looks like a setback is often a setup. Just as an archer pulls the bowstring back to launch the arrow forward with power and purpose, so does God draw His children into seasons of refinement, preparation, and redefinition before releasing them into their destiny. The Word says “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand.” – Psalm 37:23-24.  Gilgal is not just a geographical location, it’s a spiritual symbol. In Joshua 5, Gilgal was where God told Joshua to circumcise the new generation of Israelites born in the wilderness. This was more than a physical act, it was a cutting away of an old identity and a shedding of slave mentality. God was declaring: “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you” (Joshua 5:9).

Even though the Israelites were no longer in Egypt, Egypt was still in them. The identity of slavery had clung to them so deeply that when trials came, they longed to return to the very place God had delivered them from (Exodus 14:12). Why? Because when faith is tested, we often default to what is familiar, even if it’s bondage when the testing of our faith is meant to produce steadfastness. God doesn’t want us returning to our past; He desires us to move from glory to glory and from faith to faith (2 Corinthians 3:18; Romans 1:17). Growth in God is not always comfortable, but it is always fruitful. Every challenge is an invitation to go deeper in Him, to know His character, and to discover more of who He is to you Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Rapha, Jehovah Nissi, The One Who Sees me.

Leaving Behind Old Ways

Some of us have been doing things a certain way for so long that it’s become a part of our identity. But God is calling you to a new level. He’s asking you to leave behind old patterns, familiar sins, and outdated mindsets. Sometimes this can even be good things and The Holy Spirit is calling you to better , Just like the Israelites couldn’t enter the Promised Land with an Egyptian mentality, neither can you walk into your calling carrying baggage from your past. “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?” – Isaiah 43:19This new thing requires pruning (John 15:2), and pruning can feel like loss. But in God’s economy, what is cut away is not to harm but to multiply. He’s not taking you backward to punish you; He’s preparing you for a launch forward.

Heavenly Father,
I come before You with a heart full of hope and expectation. Though I may not see the answer yet, I trust in Your perfect timing and unfailing promises. You are faithful, and I know You are working even when I cannot see it.

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles…” (Isaiah 40:31)
I confess that my strength is renewed as I wait on You. I will not grow weary. I will not give up. You are empowering me in the waiting.

“The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him.” (Lamentations 3:25)
I declare that You are good to me, Lord. I will not rush ahead. I choose to seek You daily and trust that you are preparing the best for me.

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him…” (Psalm 37:7)
I speak peace over my heart. I will not be anxious or fearful. I release control , and I surrender to Your will. Your peace guards my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time… though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.” (Habakkuk 2:3)
I believe the vision You’ve given me will come to pass. I stand on Your Word and wait in faith. Your timing is perfect.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)
Lord, I don’t have to understand everything. I place my full trust in You. Your ways are higher than my ways and Your plans are greater than what I can see.

I confess that my times are in God’s hands, I refuse to give in to fear and doubt or discouragement. I am anchored in hope and stand firm in faith In Jesus my Lord.

My times are in God’s hands.
I refuse to give in to fear, doubt, or discouragement.
I am anchored in hope, standing firm in faith,
Because my God never fails.

Inherited Battles and Generational Cycles

Some of the struggles you face didn’t originate with you. These are battles inherited from previous generations—what some call “bloodline issues.” These could be patterns of addiction, cycles of poverty, chronic sickness, or emotional dysfunctions passed down through family lines. The Bible is clear that sin has generational consequences: “The Lord…visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me.” – Exodus 20:5Sin is not just an act—it can become an iniquity, a bent or predisposition toward certain behaviours. What Esau carried in his heart as bitterness and resentment, his descendant Amalek carried in his blood as hostility and violence toward Israel (Exodus 17:8-16).

This is why Solomon warned:“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” – Proverbs 4:23

The Call to Stand in Victory

Even if the sins of your ancestors have affected your life, you are not without hope. God has called you to break the cycle. You are responsible not for what was passed down to you, but for how you respond. If your parents and grandparents walked in defeat, you have the opportunity to walk in dominion. If they didn’t know God, you now have the chance to establish a new legacy of righteousness. “Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” – Esther 4:14You are not fighting for victory; you are fighting from victory. Jesus already won the ultimate battle on the cross. Now, by His Spirit, you enforce that victory in your life and bloodline. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.” – 2 Corinthians 10:4

Don’t Tolerate the Battle—Take Authority

Refuse to normalize dysfunction, sickness, or sin simply because it “runs in the family.” You’ve been given the authority to draw a bloodline in the Spirit and declare: “This ends with me.” Speak the Word, fast, pray, and stand in the gap for your family. “Behold, I give you authority…over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” – Luke 10:19Let your life become the turning point. The curses can stop, and blessings can begin. The prayers you pray today may be the reason your children and grandchildren walk in freedom tomorrow. On the other hand, if you were blessed to have parents and grandparents who walked with God and passed on spiritual victories, count it a joy—and build on it. Don’t coast on their faith. Use it as a foundation to go higher. Remember, your ceiling should become your children’s floor. “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.” – Proverbs 13:22

Final Encouragement

So if it feels like God is pulling you back, remember: He’s preparing to launch you. If you’re confronting old patterns or generational struggles, remember: You were born to break cycles and build legacies. Whether you were given a legacy of faith or a history of brokenness, the call remains the same—rise up and walk in victory. “Not that I have already attained…but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.” – Philippians 3:12

This is your moment. Step into it boldly.
